Getting Started with Customizable Products

Customizable products are products that you customize, or personalize for your customer. You may do that with embroidery, or screen-printing, or another process. Horizon and HorizonWeb can help with getting the information you need from your customer in order to fulfil the order. By configuring the product in Horizon, you set up HorizonWeb so your customers create a custom product and purchase it, and the order arrives in Horizon with all the information you need.

The information you ask your customer for is fully configurable. You can ask for text, numbers, set up lists or ask for a date. This information is associated with the product in HorizonWeb, and works with master and child products too. Your customer could:

  1. Browse for a polo shirt.
  2. Select a colour and size on a master product. This selects a child product.
  3. Select the product customization options, such as a logo position and logo size for the front of the shirt.
  4. Type some text, and choose the position and typeface used.
  5. Select the logos to be used. These can be required or optional.
  6. Add the product to the cart.

The result for the customer is the embellishments they require on a shirt, for example, an embroidery on the front and a screen-printed back. It could be a one off, or a quantity of shirts with the same design. This is only one example. The concept is as broad as your product range and the customizations you can offer. You can also choose to use only the parts of the process that meet your business need. For example, setting up logo products can be used to reduce complexity for your customer. They have fewer choices to make – product logos can be set as required or optional. You also display the logo that is added to the product through the shopping experience. This is especially useful when setting up work wear kits, where a uniform has been specified. Using customization options is more flexible. You can offer several different options over which the customer has control. You can also combine the two, for instance, a product with a required logo, but a customizable embroidery embellishment for the customer's name.

Setting Up Customizable Products

  1. Create customer catalogues to hold customer product logos. Each customer must have their product logos in one customer specific catalogue.
  2. Create a product for each logo option you want to offer to your customers.
  3. Add a Logo swap to the logo product.
  4. Next, create customization options for your products.
  5. Your customers will choose customizable products on HorizonWeb, from the C:ProductDetails control or the C:ProductDetailsAdd control, depending on how you have your Product Details page set up. They can choose product logos from the C:ProductDetails control or the C:productdetailslogos control.
  6. Sales orders can then be received that include customized products or product logos.
