Using Horizon Pack When Shopping

Setting a Horizon pack value on a catalogue item overrides Pack. Horizon pack lets you define a different pack size than the one maintained by a supplier in their catalogue. Horizon pack is used in Shopping (Auto buy from cheapest and creating purchase orders), back-to-backing sales orders to purchase orders, and when booking in stock.

If a Horizon pack is set for an item, then the Pack quantity in the Shopping list is displayed in teal.

If Horizon pack is not set for an item (left blank) then the supplier Pack is used.

Example

Suppose you have two items to choose from when buying a product:

Example items Description Pack Horizon pack Cost Pack: Cost for each Horizon Pack: Cost for each
Item 1 Product description (Pack of 6) 1 6 300.00 300.00 50.00
Item 2 Product description (Pack of 6) 6 6 480.00 80.00 80.00

In this example, the pack sizes from the suppliers differ (usually imported with the catalogue), but it is the same product. When Auto buy from cheapest highlights a product to buy, the routine calculates:

cost for each = cost / pack.

Using the Pack value, Item 2 appears to be cheaper:

Item Supplier pack value calculation
Item 1 300.00 / 1 = 300.00
Item 2 480.00 / 6 = 80.00

However, by adding a Horizon pack value of 6 to Item 1, the better value item is correctly identified as:

Item Horizon pack value calculation
Item 1 300.00 / 6 = 50.00
Item 2 480.00 / 6 = 80.00

Therefore, setting a Horizon pack value ensures that the better value item is highlighted accurately by the Auto buy from cheapest function.

Shopping List

Note: When a purchase order is created from Shopping, and the item has a Horizon pack set, the pack on the purchase order detail line uses the Horizon pack. For the corresponding opXML order, the item pack is used, so the supplier receives the correct details.
